NIAMEY (AFP) — Al-Qaeda’s North Africa branch has claimed the abduction of two Canadian diplomats and four European tourists in its first incursion into the West African state of Niger.

The claim has led to warnings that Niger, one of the world’s poorest countries and a mainly Muslim state, is in no position to root out the militants, particularly with its military fighting Tuareg rebels.

Al-Jazeera television reported late Tuesday that Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said it had seized the two Canadians, one of whom is a UN envoy, in December, and the four tourists in January.

“We are happy to bring our Islamic nation the good news of the mujahideen’s success in carrying out two quality operations in Niger,” group spokesman Salah Abu Mohammed said in an audio tape aired on the Doha-based pan-Arab channel.

“(The mujahideen) reserves the right to deal with the six captives under Islamic sharia (law),” said Mohammed.
