NEW YORK (AFP) — A Palestinian businessman has been found guilty of conspiring with a Syrian arms trafficker to export millions of dollars worth of weapons to leftist rebels in Colombia, authorities said Wednesday.
Acting US Attorney Lev Dassin said in a statement that the guilty verdict against Tareq al-Ghazi, 62, was handed down on Tuesday at the end of a two week trial.
Ghazi conspired with Syrian arms trafficker Monzer al-Kassar “to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons” to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Dassin said in a statement.
The arms went to the rebel FARC movement, “a designated foreign terrorist organization — to be used to kill US officers and employees in Colombia,” Dassin said.
