You may have heard about the recent vandalism at a Venezuelan synagogue. In one of those moments that I can truly be proud to be a Canadian (moments which are happening more and more under Harper), Canada has come out and is one of the first countries worldwide to strongly condemn it:

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canada on Monday condemned the vandalism of the main synagogue in Caracas, calling on the Venezuelan government to bring its perpetrators to justice.

The Government of Canada strongly condemns the attack on the Mariperez Synagogue,” said Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Peter Kent.

“This act of anti-Semitic vandalism is an assault on the freedoms that Canada and all democratic nations cherish … We cannot be silent.”

“The scourge of hate-filled bigotry must be confronted and rejected whenever and wherever it rears its ugly head. Canada denounces this act of anti-Semitism and all acts of anti-Semitism around the world,” Kent added in a statement.

“We urge the government of Venezuela to follow through on their commitment to investigate this crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

About fifteen people broke into Venezuela’s main synagogue overnight Friday, tied and gagged the guards, destroyed scriptures and sprayed anti-Semitic graffiti.

Israel deplored the attack and said “such acts could not have taken place without the benevolent gaze of the authorities at the highest level.”

On Sunday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez condemned the vandalism and suggested the opposition may have been involved.

Venezuela cut diplomatic ties with Israel in mid-January in protest over the Jewish state’s deadly military assault in the Gaza Strip that left more than 1,330 Palestinians dead. Chavez referred to the Israeli attacks as “genocide.”
